Project Description
Quinta do Sanguinhal
Description
Quinta do Sanguinhal is a unique space with a 19th century winery, mills and distillery. Go wine tasting and stimulate your senses in a genuine experience.
It is the Pereira da Fonseca family itself that welcomes guests to Quinta do Sanguinhal and Quinta das Cerejeiras, revealing a history of more than 100 years in the Portuguese wine sector. But don’t expect a conventional visit. The aim is to stimulate a spirit of discovery and encourage experimentation. And, of course, to provide an alternative to the usual tourist circuits.
Quinta do Sanguinhal grapes are used to produce Quinta do Sanguinhal DOC Óbidos wines, as well as IG Lisboa Sôttal light white and Sanguinhal varietals. The estate’s vineyards are planted on gentle slopes with sandy-clay soil and white grape varieties – Moscatel Graúdo, Sauvignon Blanc, Vital and Verdelho – and red grape varieties – Castelão, Touriga Nacional, Syrah, Aragonez, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.
This is also where one of the oldest distilleries in the Lisbon region is located. It consists of copper vessels for distilling pomace and two continuous columns for distilling wine. Also part of the estate’s legacy is one of the largest and oldest mills on the Iberian Peninsula, with spindle and pole presses, the oldest dating from 1871. The quinta also has warehouses for aging brandies and liqueurs, as well as areas for aging wines in barrels and bottles.
